Bottom Line: The latest research is in on boozing from a consortium of top University researchers (University of London, Helsinki, Harvard, etc.). It tells a similar story with regard to how much boozing you can do without taking on too much risk each week. It also has new info on the fastest growing group of alcoholics. Here's the current weekly guidance on how many drinks you can consume weekly without crossing the line into risky behavior:

  • Men 24
  • Women 16

That's unchanged from the previous guidance. What has changed is the level of consumption among a group of adults of a certain age. The fastest growing group of alcoholics...It's retiring Boomers. There's a 12% increase in alcohol consumption upon retirement on average. For those who were already regular drinkers - many are tipping over into the risky consumption category. I can see where this would easily occur so it's something you might want to be mindful of as you enter that next phase of life.
