Bottom Line: Your daily recap of the biggest news from around the state that impacts you in South Florida. Gas prices continued lower through the weekend.

  • Gas prices are four cents higher statewide today. The average price is $3.22 per gallon, five cents higher than yesterday and 17 cents lower than a week ago due to the October suspension of Florida’s sales tax on gas. Independent of gas tax collection, the price per gallon is eight cents higher than a week ago.
  • Florida’s trend for new COVID-19 cases has fallen to the lowest levels since March. Florida’s weekly trend for daily cases is currently 1,391 – the lowest since March 28th.  The especially low total is in part due to the impact of Hurricane Ian – Florida’s trend had already been at 5-month lows preceding Ian.
  • The first votes for the 2022 midterm elections have been recorded by the Florida Division of Elections. As of Wednesday, over 13,500 vote-by-mail ballots had been returned to election supervisors according to the Florida Division of Elections. Palm Beach County is leading the state in votes cast by mail thus far.
  • The Miami metro has set a record for having the lowest unemployment rate of any large metro in US history in three sectors. According to data from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, we currently have record low unemployment rates in financial services, professional and business services and education and health services. The overall unemployment rate in the Tri-County is currently 2.6%.
