Florida News That Impacts You – January 23rd, 2023 

Bottom Line: Your daily recap of the biggest news from around the state that impacts you in South Florida. Gas prices continued lower through the weekend.  

  • Florida’s unemployment rate is nearing record low levels at 2.5% as reported by the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity. The rate dropped by .1% in December on the back of 21,400 additional jobs being added. Florida’s unemployment rate is a full percentage point lower than the national average. 
  • Florida’s gas prices were flat through the weekend with the statewide average remaining $3.41 for regular unleaded. Prices have risen by 15 cents per gallon over the past week. Prices in Palm Beaches were higher once again however, rising three cents through the weekend to $3.61 per gallon, the highest price in the state. 
  • Bankrupt Regal Cinemas has announced they’re closing the Shadowood 16 cinemas off Glades Road. The movie theater first opened in that location in 1987. An exact date hasn’t been provided, however the company said it would be “soon”. 
  • A record 64,577 New York residents permanently relocated to Florida last year – breaking the previous record, of just a year earlier, by greater than 3,000 relocations according to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Relocations from New York to Florida were 39% higher than pre-pandemic levels.
