Florida News That Impacts You – January 30th, 2024 

Bottom Line: Your daily recap of the biggest news from around the state that impacts you in South Florida.    

  • In yesterday’s state legislative session movers included the Coverage for Diagnostic and Supplemental Breast Examinations bill. The proposed legislation would prevent out-of-pocket expenses for breast examinations deemed medically necessary. The Coastal Construction and Assessments bill, which would leave coastal zoning authority with the state but that would allow local governments to seek improvements for water quality, advanced. The Sheriffs in Consolidated Governments bill, which would grant Sheriff's authority over the use of budgeted law enforcement funds took another step forward in the state senate. The Hemp bill, which places THC limits on certain products, and bans many synthetic products, took another step forward on Monday as well.  
  • There will be flight delays at Palm Beach International Airport today as President Biden visits the area. A Temporary Flight Restriction has been issued between 11:45am to 4:05pm. After leaving the Palm Balm Beaches President Biden will head to Miami where flight restrictions are in place from between 4:30pm to 10pm. Airlines were notified in advance of the president’s visit and impacted travelers should contact their airline. 
  • The Town of Jupiter has officially hired its first fire chief, Darrel Donatto following the Town’s recent decision to decouple from Palm Beach County Fire Rescue in lieu of the establishment of a municipal fire department. Chief Donatto, has 43 years of experience in the Palm Beaches including five years as fire chief for the Town of Palm Beach. He will oversee the development of two fire stations and the hiring of personnel. Jupiter will officially launch its fire rescue operations on October 1st of 2026.  
  • It's another cooler than usual day today with highs near 70. Temperatures will be about 4 degrees cooler than usual for this time of year today. Cooler than usual temps are expected for at least the next week and a half. 
  • Gas prices rose on Monday. The average price statewide for regular unleaded is now $3.20 per gallon - 5 cents higher than yesterday and 12 cents higher than a week ago. In Palm Beach County the average price is $3.39 per gallon, in Martin the average is $3.27 and in Indian River County the average is $3.21 per gallon.
