Democrat Race For U.S. House District 18 Features Pam Keith Vs. Oz Vazquez

In our Election Spotlight, both candidates running for the Democrat Primary in the 18th Congressional District are focused on the current holder of that seat.

"Brian Mast is an environmentalist like Donald Trump is a businessman. There's a whole lot of showmanship and not much to show."

Pam Keith when asked about the Republican's work for water quality.

The Navy veteran said this when we asked what makes her a better candidate than her primary opponent Oz Vazquez.

"This is a moment for leaders in the black community to speak up and address the challenges and issues that are being discussed by the Black Lives Matter movement. Being an African-American woman who has been talking about these things for years, that puts me in a very different posture to be able to talk about those issues."

Keith also ran for U.S. House, District 18 two years ago, but was defeated by Lauren Baer in the Democrat primary. Baer lost to Republican Mast in the general election.

Vazquez says Mast doesn't properly represent the residents of District 18.

"My district...my community...my home, that doesn't have somebody looking out for them, doesn't have the type of voice that we need in Congress."

The son of immigrants, Vazquez touts his work with AmeriCorps and personal experiences for being the right candidate for the job.

"People are looking for someone who has the experience of having their family get knocked off their feet. My dad got sick. We relied on Social Security and Medicare. I had that first hand experience. I've served people who've been in that same position. I've served people at risk of homelessness."

In the above audio players, hear more from both candidates on the issues, including financially struggling families and businesses due to COVID-19.

The winner of the August 18th Democrat primary will face the winner of the Republican primary between Incumbent Mast and challenger Nick Vessio.
