Hillsborough Schools Change Course, Mandates Masks in Class

TAMPA -- The Hillsborough School District changes the rules on masks for students, with just hours before the new school year starts.

Now, parents who don't want their children wearing masks will have to sign an "opt out" form. Previously the district was going to make masks entirely optional for the new school year.

This is allowed under a loophole in the state's rules against mask mandates. It's expected to stay in place until at least September 3rd. The district will make its next move after consulting with local health officials, including USF Health and Tampa General Hospital.

Amanda Domsohn tells News Channel 8 in Tampa, her child will follow the rules but she's glad parents have a choice.

"Just ... so people don't feel that they're told what to do," Domsohn said.

Classes in Hillsborough begin Tuesday (10th).
