South Florida Congresswoman And Secretary of State Focusing On Haiti

As the violence escalates in Haiti and the county is overrun by gangs, South Florida Congresswoman Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick is calling for Prime Minister Ariel Henry to hand over power to a transitional government.

"We are demanding that not one gang member, not gang leader is included in the transition government, and the presidential transition council and that we can actually have a civil society."

The Co-Chair of the Haiti Caucus says last year alone there were nearly five-thousand murders and two-thousand kidnappings in the nation.

The U.S. Embassy in Haiti is now evacuating non-essential staffers.

Her family members still on the island tell her they hear heavy shooting, have guns under their pillows and don't know what's going to happen.

Since Haitian gang leaders have ties to Russia, she believes what's going on in the nation is a large security risk for the United States.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken is also talking with Caribbean leaders about a transition of power while attending a Caribbean Community meeting today in Jamaica.
