Law enforcement is beefing up patrols near Jewish synagogues along Florida's Treasure Coast as the conflict in the Middle East heats up.

Martin County Sheriff William Snyder tells CBS 12 News that there are no specific threats currently, but...

“I cannot run a sheriff’s office on hope. I have to run the sheriff’s office on reality, and the reality is that Israel and Iran are at it, they’re sending intercontinental ballistics at Israel, the chances that Israel retaliates creates an environment where, perhaps, antisemitism is spiked here in the United States, I have to be ready for that.”

There is a fear for some in the Jewish community that they may not be safe attending religious services. Rabbi Matthew Durbin of Temple Beit Hayam in Stuart says security has been increased at the synagogue.

“For us, the concern is how can we keep our congregation calm, at the same time informed of what’s going on within the community, and the broader community, and how we can best protect and keep all of us safe.”

The St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office says it has also increased patrols near synagogues and there are enhanced patrols in Indian River County, where Sheriff's officials remain in contact with Jewish organizations.
