Seventeen deputies from the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office have been killed in the line of duty and they were all honored during a "Fallen Heroes" ceremony held on Thursday.

"Unlike other careers, the brave men and women who chose this profession know fully that they might one day be called upon to lay down their lives. Those we honor this morning made that choice willingly. They embraced it and that is why their sacrifice means so much."

During the ceremony, the PBSO chaplain read from the scriptures and then the names of all 17 fallen deputies were called out. A long-stem flower placed at the photos of each one...from the first to make his sacrifice, George Douglass in 1921, to the most recent fallen deputy, Clarence "Bud" Backherms, whose end of watch came in 2019.
