Half-Days Are Gone & PBC Schools Pass Resolution To Protect Illegal Immigrant Students From ICE

The Palm Beach County School District has passed a resolution to welcome all students, even those who are in the country illegally.

The district says it will keep kids from getting taken by agents with Immigration and Customs Enforcement on campus and states that the district will work with community groups to create a plan in case someone is deported.

While the resolution doesn’t modify school policy, it states the school district will try to keep ICE agents off school campuses.

The school district also did away with half-days and added a couple of days off for Thanksgiving week.

Seeing high absentee rates on half-days, and the Monday and Tuesday before Thanksgiving each year, the district has tweaked the calendar going forward. The Palm Beach County School Board approved the academic calendars for the next three years on Wednesday.

Thanksgiving break previously started the day before the holiday, meaning students were expected to show up for classes on the first two days of the week, but many didn't.

There were also five early-dismissal days on the calendar for elementary school students and seven late-start days for high schoolers, and those are gone.  Teachers who would use that extra time for lesson-planning will now have a full week before school starts each year to do that.
