The Florida Department of Health is warning of a scam that's taking advantage of patients who are looking forward to medical marijuana, as the state continues to implement its expansion.
Crooks are contacting people and saying that they can hook them up with a reduced priced medical marijuana ID card, then ask for credit card information and Social Security numbers.
Our CBS 12 partners spoke with president of a marijuana consulting service who works as a liaison between patients, doctors and the Florida Office of Compassionate Use, which is the only agency that can issue those ID cards.
John Cato says the department does not accept credit cards as payment and his service would never cold call someone since Florida law prohibits a recommendation for marijuana over the phone. You must see a doctor in person.
He urges anyone receiving contact like this to report the scam to the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services by calling 1-800-HELP-FLA.
