Protecting The Palm Beaches: Chief Katz On Importance Of Body Cams

The murder of a New York City Police Officer this week, called an "assassination" by department officials, highlights the continuing existence of an anti-cop sentiment among some groups of people.

12-year veteran Officer Miosotis Familia was shot in the head while sitting in a mobile command unit in The Bronx.

The suspect was shot and killed by police.

Last year, we saw these types of murders occur in the wake of high-profile police involved shootings.

Boynton Beach Police Chief Jeffrey Katz believes that having transparency through the use of body cams could go a long way to ensuring that the public knows that the overwhelming majority of cops are just trying to protect and serve.

"More often than not when officers interact with members of the public, they do so in a way that reflects the best of who we are.  And we live in a society where people challenge authority greatly and having documentation of that I think is very powerful.  Because, absent that documentation you can only speculate with respect to whether or not an officer was appropriate in their interactions with a member of the public."

Boynton Beach is one of a few law enforcement agencies in Palm Beach County now providing all officers with body cameras.
