Hysterical Headlines (Funny or Absurd) for December 29th:
Bottom Line: These are your daily doses of nonsense from the (often GSS) media and my hot takes...
A better way to elect our president — by popular vote | Editorial Board Sun-Sentinel
Excerpt: The election last year was the fifth in which the candidate with the most votes lost the presidency. It’s a dangerous way to run a democracy that depends upon the people’s trust.
Florida could help in a big way to put an end to Electoral College malfunctions, but the necessary legislation doesn’t appear to have a warm welcome in Tallahassee. It should.
Hot Take: The Sun-Sentinel is working on making the GSS list about daily. Where do I begin. I guess I'll start with the obvious. The premise of this country that provided the freedom of expression that these fools are abusing. "Dangerous way to run a democracy"...This just in. The United States of America isn't a Democracy. Perhaps you should learn our system of government before espousing your basis for how to change it. Were the United States a Democracy the national popular vote would determine the Presidency and thus your point would be mute. You happen to live in a Representative Republic - this just in.
Now I suspect that the editorial board folks at the Sun-Sentinel are aware of this slightly important detail (our actual system of government) and simply count on their readers to be ignorant enough to think it makes sense. That's just sad. And after fighting a revolution for your freedom, creating a system of government that enabled a group of colonies to become the world's leading super-power within 150 years and providing unparalleled opportunity for individuals - you have the audacity to call it dangerous? There really aren't words but their message is literally anti-American.
Why Republicans Need to Self-Deport From Washington Brad Todd, The Federalist
Hot Take: This is actually a brilliant piece with a funny headline. The article articulates what ails the Republican party and uses facts to show that it's within the Washington D.C. metro. The same city where the President of the United States only received 4% of the vote. Call it the swamp, the ocean of the swamp or whatever. Spending enough time around that level of an altered state of reality isn't healthy for those who're supposed to represent the rest of us in the real world. The less time politicians, especially Republicans, spend in that bastion of wasted tax dollars the better.
The Political Lesson of 2017: Resistance Works Matthew Yglesias, Vox
Excerpt: Trump is getting the minimum done, and Republicans are paying the price for backing him.
Hot Take: I'm almost at a loss with this one. On one hand I'm just kind of laughing. SCOTUS, Largest tax reform since Reagan, End of the individual mandate for Obamacare, 8,000+ regulations repealed, etc. On the other hand, if the left is happy with this level of production out of the Trump administration - I'll gladly take another year of it in 2018 please.
Until tomorrow...
