The President's approval and our view of the direction of the country

The President's approval and our view of the direction of the country for May 4th

Bottom Line: This is a weekly story to get a reality/temperature check regarding what's really going on with public opinion of the President and our view of the direction of the country. First here's the high point, low point and current ratings for President Trump...

  • Trump's lowest ratings: 37% approval and 59% disapproval: -22% (8/4/17)

  • Trump highest approval ratings 45% approval and 43% disapproval +2% (1/27/17):

  • Trump's current ratings: 45% approval and 51% disapproval: -6%

So, wow – here's a headline you probably aren't hearing throughout the media. President Trump's average approval rating over the past week is tied for the highest it's been at any point to date. Stormy, Mueller, Comey, it's clear that the economy and the President's foreign policy progress are been viewed more importantly than the drama around his administration. Another somewhat ironic note... The President's net approval rating is the best it's been in literally a year. The last time his net approval rating was this high was May 3rd of last year.

President Trump's approval rating rose by four points this week. That's also the biggest one week increase in his rating thus far.

As I've been tracking for many months... The more likely someone is to vote, the higher the President's overall approval rating.

  • With adult only samples his rating over the past week averaged: 42%

  • Registered voters: 44%

  • Likely voters: 49%

Looking at the direction of the country this week...

Where we stood on Inauguration Day:

  • Right Direction: 30%

  • Wrong Track: 59%

  • Net: -29%

Last Week:

  • Right Direction: 36%

  • Wrong Track: 55%

  • Net: -19%

And Today:

  • Right Direction: 38%

  • Wrong Track: 54%

  • Net: -16%

Change: +13% under Trump & +3% over the previous update.

For the third consecutive week we're seeing more optimism on the overall direction of the country. This is tracking along with the President's improved ratings as well. In short, there's a significant disconnect between much of the negativity in the media and what we're seeing in these numbers.
