Email etiquette for 2019

Email etiquette for 2019

Bottom Line:Technology is always changing and that means that communication always is too. 30 years ago, emails (as you know them today) didn’t exist. 20 years ago, they were exclusively made on a PC. Ten years ago, emails on mobile devices were new to most people and today...

  • Over 70% of emails are opened on a mobile device

Just as emails revolutionized communication and mobile devices revolutionized emails, the lines between professionalism and slang have never been more blurred. Business etiquette expert Shelby Shrhak, is out with some updated information about the do’s and don’ts of emails for professional purposes in 2019. The odds are you’ll be guilty of at least one of these don’ts...

  • Addressing emails to more people than is necessary
  • Confusing work and personal email addresses (easy to do on mobile devices)
  • Using BCC to try to cause harm to a co-worker
  • Non-specific subject-lines
  • Inappropriate greetings (she recommends hi)
  • Not introducing yourself if it’s someone new to you
  • Too many exclamation points
  • Being too wordy (get to the point)
  • Using slang (again prevalent on smart phones)
  • Sarcasm (doesn’t work in emails)
  • Emailing when a conversation is more effective

Some of those sound familiar? The easiest way to improve is to stop doing “the bad stuff”, as a radio exec once told me.
