Florida's recap – Highlights from around the state – August 19th

Bottom Line: Your daily recap of the some of the biggest news from around the state that impacts you in South Florida.

  • A 25 year-old Daytona Beach man was arrested after authorities received a tip regarding disturbing messages from the individual who said he wanted the world record for the longest kill (in excess of 3 miles) and sought to kill 100 people as he intended to die but “have fun doing it”.
  • After approximately 300 schools across Florida didn’t comply with the armed security mandate (1 officer per 1,000 students) in the prior school year, it appears nearly 200 schools across the state – including 29 in Broward, still don’t have the mandated security. The state had previously indicated it would specifically name the schools that weren’t compliant. Commonly, the issue had been with charter schools that weren’t allocated funds by the school districts for school security. After a legal challenge Palm Beach County specifically was forced to allocate millions of additional dollars for the security for the 2019-2020 school year.
  • After failing to pass in this year’s state session, Sen. Jeff Brandes has filed a bill to push for ending Florida’s Constitution Revision Commission in the upcoming session that starts in January. Governor DeSantis has indicated he supports ending the commission
  • “Moms Demand Action” held rallies in all 50 states over the weekend. 200 protesters showed up to the demonstration in Holiday Park in Fort Lauderdale calling for additional gun control measures.
