What’s wrong with our society? Let's talk about values

Bottom Line: If the premise of anything is false anything built on it is bound to be too. Words you’ve likely heard me cite previously. We’ve talked a lot recently about some of what’s wrong with our society and why so many more people, especially teens and young adults, are bent on carrying out violence against others. Specifically, I’ve pointed to the lack of faith and morality being instilled in our kids starting at an early age being a catalyst. The latest survey work from NBC and the Wall Street Journal seems to back up that notion. It’s about values and here’s the difference with young adults compared to older ones on what “very important” in their lives.

Values deemed to be very important to most adults over 38:

  • Patriotism, Religion/God, Children – raising a family, hard work, community involvement, tolerance for others

Of those here are the ones that aren’t valued by most adults under the age of 38:

  • Patriotism, Religion/God, Children - raising a family

What’s most striking is that only 30% of adults under 38 say religion/God, is very important to them and only 42% say patriotism is. When one doesn’t have a specific moral compass that’s important to them or sense of pride and unity in their country – where does that leave them? There are numerous likely reasons as to why violence has reached unprecedented levels with younger adults and teens in our society, but I think it starts with the premise of a lack of faith and common unity. Teaching these values to our kids is probably more important than at any time previous.
