Weekly political update – Where news & perceptions meet reality

Bottom Line:This is your weekly reality check. What's really going on with public opinion of the president and our view of the direction of the country? Here it is...

  • Trump's lowest rating: 37% approval (8/4/17)
  • Trump highest approval rating: 46% approval (9/19/19)
  • Trump's current rating: 44% approval

As the 2020 Democrats continue to pursue impeachment against President Trump, they may have managed to dent the President’s momentum with the aid from their allies in the news media. A week ago, President Trump reached the highest average approval ratings of his administration. A week later against the backdrop of false reporting and impeachment hysteria once again, President Trump backed off those highs by two points. That in and of itself is somewhat telling. Given the extent of the full court press by the press and Democrats in Congress over the past week, only having a 2% dip from his highest approval ratings to date is an indication of how few people are being swayed by the tactics being employed. Also, rest assured that as people once again come to realize that this Ukrainian aid charade is just that, trust of news media and many members of Congress will reach new lows.

It’s been the case throughout his term thus far, that the more informed and engaged someone is politically, the more likely they are to approve of President Trump. That remains the case once again this week.

  • Adult only samples averaged: N/A
  • Registered voters: 43%
  • Likely voters: 49%

What you never hear reported are the ratings of the Democratic leaders opposing him. Let’s just say they’d need a huge push of support to simply catch President Trump’s approval ratings. Here’s the latest...

  • Pelosi: 34%
  • Schumer: 26%

While both trail President Trump considerably in overall approval, the 26% approval rating for Senate Minority leader Chuck Schumer in particular, is a new record low for him. Bogus impeachment investigations aren’t what the average American wants out of Congress.

Looking at the direction of the country this week...

Where we stood on Inauguration Day:

  • Right Direction: 30%

Today:

  • Right Direction: 37%

Overall, we’re 7% collectively more optimistic than we were during the Obama administration.
