Florida’s Senators – How Floridians feel about their performances

Bottom Line: In a separate story today, I’ve depicted Governor DeSantis’s remarkable performance as governor thus far in the eyes of the average Floridan. His switch from federal politics to state issues has certainty played to his strengths. Meanwhile Florida’s Senator’s took the reversed path. Both started out in Florida politics before making their way to Washington. As we’re about to enter the 4th quarter of this year here’s how Floridians feel about the performance of each of them based on Morning Consult’s running data.

Rubio

  • Overall: +12%

Solid performance overall for Marco, and importantly for him, increasingly positive. His overall approval in Florida is 3% higher than earlier this year and is trending in a generally positive direction. Speaking of which, let’s look at Rick Scott’s ratings.

Scott

  • Overall: +8%

Our former Governor, while not quite as approved of as Senator Rubio, is also trending in the right direction. He’s up a point over earlier this year and appears to be viewed as the less divisive figure of the two in Washington. That perhaps is a nod to the way he had the ability at times to pull together coalitions as governor to advance policy, like the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Safety Act for example.

In reviewing our Governor and two U.S. Senators, there are a couple of themes. First, all are trending towards higher approval ratings heading into year end. Second, Governor DeSantis is continuing to build support from an already high level which is especially impressive in a state like Florida. And finally, these trends bode well for President Trump entering 2020 – especially given Trump’s win in Florida in 2016.
