- 27 new laws going into effect in Florida today highlighted by new “Hands-free” mobile use mandated in construction and school zones along with the full expansion of the Guardian program in Florida’s schools and enforcement of the new “sanctuary cities” law.
- A Miami US District Court ruled that Florida’s new sanctuary cities law, which is in force today, should not have compelled local law enforcement to potentially have to transport those lacking legal status across state lines if requested by federal authorities, but upheld the remainder of the law which mandates local authorities report detained individuals lacking status to federal authorities and detain them for up to 48 additional hours for federal authorities to be able to process them.
- According to Census data 133,500 Puerto Ricans permanently relocated after hurricane Maria. Florida was the most common destination with approximately 44,000 Puerto Ricans re-settling in our state. Orlando was the top destination for those who relocated.
- Florida’s first Human Trafficking summit was conducted by Governor DeSantis and AG Moody. In addition to discussing implementation of Florida’s new human trafficking law requiring training of hospitality employees for the purpose of identifying suspicious activity – the state also announced a program with Uber will train 100,000 drivers statewide to also report suspicious activity. Special emphasis is also being placed on the upcoming WrestleMania event in Tampa and Super Bowl in Miami
