Weekly political update – Where news & perceptions meet reality

Bottom Line: This is your weekly reality check. What's really going on with public opinion of the president and our view of the direction of the country? Here it is...

  • Trump's lowest rating: 37% approval (8/4/17)
  • Trump highest approval rating: 46% approval (9/19/19)
  • Trump's current rating: 43% approval

What’s happening here is impressive for President Trump. I have a read on about what percentage of potential Trump supporters still pay any credence to the MSM and congressional Democrats...3%. Why three percent? On September 19th, right as Democrats were ramping up the latest faux impeachment crisis with the whistle-blower who wasn’t a witness to a crime that didn’t happen, President Trump was averaging 46% approval. Weeks later with the full court press against him he’s averaging 43%.Not only is President Trump’s approval rating only off three points since the start of this, he’s flat with last week including maintaining his highest rating with likely voters. One more nugget – his approval ratings are higher at this stage of his Presidency – than President Obama’s.

It’s been the case throughout his term thus far, that the more informed and engaged someone is politically, the more likely they are to approve of President Trump. That remains the case once again this week.

  • Adult only samples: 43%
  • Registered voters: 43%
  • Likely voters: 47%

What you never hear reported are the ratings of the Democratic leaders opposing him. Here’s the latest...

  • Pelosi: 38%
  • Schumer: 27%

Now, what is interesting is that Nancy is up four points over two weeks ago, so it is safe to say that impeachment driven Democrats who weren’t happy with her previously seem to be warming to her inquiry but the fact remains that President Trump is still significantly more approved of than Speaker Pelosi. And I’m not sure what to say about Chuck.

Looking at the direction of the country this week...

Where we stood on Inauguration Day:

  • Right Direction: 30%

Today:

  • Right Direction: 35%

Overall, even in the mist of impeachment palooza 2019, we’re 5% collectively more optimistic than we were during the Obama administration.
