Drone Delivery coming soon from the USPS?
Bottom Line: Years ago, when Jeff Bezos sounded crazy like a genius, laying the groundwork for what now is about to happen with drone deliveries, he likely envisioned partners who’d play key roles in delivering their stuff in drones. After all, Amazon’s not a delivery company and unless they truly intend world domination will probably not attempt it either. Instead, interestingly, Amazon partnered with the USPS shortly after the Bezos floated idea. Now the entire plan may be on the precipice of coming together.
The USPS has filed paperwork with the FAA to allow for drone delivery of packages. The current plan, if approved, would allow the FAA to have packages, up to 55 pounds, delivered by drones beyond the line of sight of postal employees. In other words, carriers would still deliver packages, but drones would be used to get to places that carriers have trouble reaching. The request is up for public comment until November 4th with the FAA at which time they’ll begin the consideration process for the proposal. The plan was always for a 2020 start for drone delivery. This appears to be a crazy brilliant plan years in the making coming together right on schedule.
