Coronavirus update – June 2nd

No hyperbole, no misinformation, no nonsense.While Brazil and Russia continue to struggle with spikes in new cases, the rate of increase slowed considerably Monday, producing the fewest new cases in five days. In the US, just over 22,000 new cases were reported – in line with the prior week averages. With over 106,000 deaths attributed to COVID-19, it is the deadliest virus in the United States since the 1918 pandemic which killed an estimated 500,000 people.
Here’s where we stand as of now...
Worldwide:
- 6,383,825 – 377,789 deaths – 2,920,896 recovered
Nationally:
- 1,859,597 cases – 106,927 deaths – 615,426 recovered
Florida:
- 56,830 cases – 2,461 deaths
In Florida, there were 667 new diagnosed cases Monday, which is slightly below the recent average. This comes as the Florida Keys reopened to nonresidents for the first time since March. Deaths recorded in the state were also below the recent average with only 9 COVID related deaths reported.
Florida continues to outperform the country as a whole.We’re the third most populous state but just 9th in total cases and 11th in deaths. We’ve also tested more aggressively than most states, with only New York having tested more than Florida. More than half of all of Florida’s cases remain in the tri-county area with Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach having the most cases in the state in that order.
The overall positive test rate in Florida remained at 5.5% Monday-exactly half of the peak rate of 11%. As a reminder, the newest diagnosed cases are new cases obtained through community spread. This reinforces the importance of adhering to the warnings of public officials including social distancing and wearing masks in public. The average age of someone diagnosed with COVID-19 in Florida is 54.
