Coronavirus update – June 10th

Bottom Line: This daily update is designed to put everything in perspective with straight-forward facts. No hyperbole, no misinformation, no nonsense. Brazil continues to be the world’s hotspot for growth of the virus driving an overall increase in new daily cases. We had better news in the US with a third straight day of fewer than 20,000 new diagnosed cases for the first time in two weeks...an encouraging sign, especially with concerns over the protests potentially sparking an increase in new cases. Speaking of the protests,an undisclosed number of National Guard troops who protected Washington D.C. during the riots have now tested positive for COVID-19.

In Florida, after dropping below 1,000 new cases for the first time in five days on Monday, we saw an increase on Tuesday with 1,096 new diagnosed cases. Palm Beach County continues to experience the most rapid growth in new cases statewide – now only around 500 cases behind Broward. Over half of Florida’s cases remain in the tri-county with Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach County having the most cases in that order.

Here’s where we stand as of now...

Worldwide:

  • 7,334,728 – 413,981 deaths – 3,616,734 recovered

Nationally:

  • 2,045,715 cases – 114,151 deaths – 788,881 recovered

Florida:

  • 66,000 cases – 2,769 deaths

Despite the most recent news Florida continues to outperform the country, Florida is 8th in total cases nationally while we remain 11th in deaths. Florida is the third most populous state. Here are the South Florida hotspots right now:

Palm Beach (5): 33415, 33430, 33460, 33461, 33463

Broward (6): 33023, 33024, 33025, 33028, 33311, 33313

Miami-Dade (20): 33012, 33015, 33016, 33033, 33034, 33055, 33125, 33126, 33136, 33139, 33140, 33142, 33143, 33147 33157, 33161, 33162, 33165, 33166, 33175,

The overall positive test rate in Florida dropped to a new low of 5.2% on Tuesday, less than half of the peak rate of 11%. As a reminder, the newest diagnosed cases are new cases obtained through community spread. This reinforces the importance of adhering to the warnings of public officials including social distancing and wearing masks in public. The average age of someone diagnosed with COVID-19 in Florida is 54. With over 113,000 deaths attributed to COVID-19, it is the deadliest virus in the United States since the 1918 pandemic which killed an estimated 500,000 people.
