Bottom Line: Your daily recap of the some of the biggest news from around the state that impacts you in South Florida.

  • Florida had the fewest new COVID-19 cases reported since June 23rd on Monday. The weekly moving average of cases is also now the lowest since June 28th. The peak day for cases was a month ago today – July 11th. All of the current trends are positive and suggest Florida moved past the peak of the pandemic a month ago.
  • Florida CFO Jimmy Patronis wrote a letter to Florida’s university presidents urging them to bring back collegiate sports this fall. He told the schools that if liability concerns were the reason for not resuming athletics, there might be options the state could extend to protect them. Likewise, Governor DeSantis urged the resumption of college sports on Monday.
  • Monday was the first day of grade school education for several school districts throughout the state – including Orange County. Six school districts opened with in-person classroom education options. In all instances social distancing was encouraged, there were assigned seats on buses and students had their temperatures taken before entering school. Martin County joins today with classroom options available.
  • Scientists studying the recent Saharan Air Layer which made its way across the Atlantic was the largest on record. The dust helped mitigate tropical activity in the Atlantic however it is now abating which could lead to an increase in tropical activity in the mid-Atlantic.
