Where Florida lottery money goes

Where Florida lottery money goes

Bottom Line: It’s been nearly two years since I last updated where money from the Florida Lottery goes. The silver lining for many who play is that while they may not win, at least money is going to education. And that’s true. But how much? The answer is about a quarter out of every dollar. Over the past year here's how the Florida Lottery distributed revenue.

  • 66.5% paid to winners
  • 25.5% education
  • 5.6% to retailers
  • 1.4% to ticket vendors
  • 1.0% admin fees

So once lottery winnings have been paid out, 76% of the proceeds went directly to education within the state last year. Here's what that resulted in over the past reported year.

  • Broward: $61 million
  • Miami-Dade: $124 million
  • Palm Beach: $57 million

Throughout its history here’s how much money has gone to the tri-county area for education:

  • Broward: $2.5 billion
  • Miami-Dade: $4 billion
  • Palm Beach: $1.9 billion

So, when you play the lottery the majority of what you lose does end up in the pocket of the eventual winners but for what’s left over three-quarters of it does end up in our schools.
