Top Three Takeaways – February 19th, 2021

  1. Perseverance Prevails. It happened to be the headline to a Mars Rover story I was reading just as I was about to work on today’s takeaways last night. It also seemed apropos for wrapping up the week. It’s awesome that the Mars Rover Perseverance prevailed in the initial phase as it landed on Mars. And for reasons we probably won’t understand for years. The microwave oven. The personal computer. Your smartphone. Baby formula. All among the things we rely on all day every day that wouldn’t exist without the space program. Often the most effectual outcomes of successful space missions aren’t even what’s discovered on the missions but rather what’s created, invented and innovated to successfully execute them. As the saying goes, necessity is the mother of invention. And for that reason alone, Perseverance has already prevailed...let alone if it actually turns up some super cool Mars pics & space rock stuff. Also, the west coast gets all of the credit for technological innovation but think about it this for a moment... Would there have even been a Silicon Valley if it hadn’t been for Florida’s space programs? It’s only appropriate that the Miami metro (encompassing the entire TriCounty) is now a top ten emerging technology hub within the United States. You might say our state has been number one right along.
  2. 7. Of all of the amazing stats attributed to Rush...32 consecutive years at the top of the industry. 600+ affiliates, 20 million plus weekly listeners, etc. The one that is most impressive to me in context is the number seven and it speaks to the perseverance theme. I still marvel that Rush Limbaugh was fired in radio seven times but never gave up because he believed in himself and what he was trying to achieve enough to persevere. There’s a lesson in there for all of us. As one listener mentioned to me, he’d never known life without Rush Limbaugh. I hear ya - I'm about right there too, I was nine when I first heard Rush and this side of my parents no single person has had a more profound impact on my life. It’s been a brutal couple of days coming to terms with reality...but about that perseverance thing...
  3. Up your game. Since Wednesday Sean Hannity has been crystal clear about what needs to happen. That’s been his message. That’s also a message of perseverance. It’s also how Rush overcame all of the rejection early in his career. One of the easiest ways we can fail is to allow a person or two (or seven in Rush’s example) to make us feel that we can’t do or can’t achieve what we really want. We should all take that lesson of Rush’s to heart. We should also work on self-improvement. We’re all going one of two directions in life. In honor of Rush, it’s a good time for all of us to heed Sean’s advice and up our game. After all think of how Rush upped his and persevered against almost all odds.
