Palm Beach's Needle Exchange Program Launches

Palm Beach County's needle exchange program has just launched.

FLASH, which stands for Florida Access to Syringe and Health Services, is available through a mobile unit that will be outside of Compass Community Center in Lake Worth Beach from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Mondays and Fridays.

People who want to exchange a used syringe for a clean one must pre-register with the program, while remaining anonymous.

The program is aimed at reducing the spread of infectious diseases and linking addicts to recovery services, when they're ready to do so.

Florida passed a law approve needle exchange programs in 2019, as long as taxpayer dollars are not used to run it. FLASH is supported by private donations.

A pilot program in Miami led to thousands of syringes being taken off the streets.
