Florida News That Impacts You – May 27th, 2021

Bottom Line: Your daily recap of the some of the biggest news from around the state that impacts you in South Florida.

  • Florida is nearing eight-month lows in its average trend for new coronavirus cases. On back of 2,327 new COVID-19 cases reported Wednesday by the Florida Department of Health, Florida’s weekly trend for cases fell to 2,364 – the lowest since October 7th.
  • Over 10.1 million Floridians have now been vaccinated with at least a first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine including 8.1 million who’ve now completed a vaccine series. The rate of new vaccinations continues to slow as it’s now been over a week since there were more first doses of a Moderna or Pfizer vaccine administered than second doses. Approximately 55% of adults have been vaccinated.
  • The Palm Beach County School District removed the term white advantage from its equity statement in Wednesday’s special meeting on a 4-3 vote. The special meeting was called after backlash to the district’s new philosophy included elements of critical race theory. The other elements the equity statement remain intact.
  • Governor DeSantis confirmed educators will receive $1,000 bonuses as part of the state’s budget he indicated he’d signed within the next couple of weeks.
  • The CDC has approved the first conditional cruises from Florida ports since the onset of the pandemic. Royal Caribbean and Celebrity Cruises have been granted approval out of Port Everglades and PortMiami. The initial Royal Caribbean cruise would be a two-day test out of PortMiami on June 20th. The initial Celebrity voyage would sail from Port Everglades on June 26th. It remains unclear whether the state’s law banning vaccine passports will be a sticking point with the resumption of cruising in Florida. The CDC’s recommended guidance remains having 98% of crew members and 95% of passengers vaccinated.
