Bottom Line: Your daily recap of the some of the biggest news from around the state that impacts you in South Florida.

  • Florida’s trend for new COVID-19 cases is nearly the lowest in a year. After only 1,253 new cases were reported by the Florida Department of Health on Tuesday, Florida’s weekly trend for cases stands at 1,849 per day. That’s the lowest since June 15th.
  • Over 10.3 million Floridians, including about 56% of adults, have now been vaccinated with at least a first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine. 8.3 million have now completed a vaccine series.
  • Governor DeSantis signed the transgender sports ban legislation into law on Tuesday. Under the law, which takes effect July 1st, biological boys can’t participate competitively in female athletics. Florida is the 8th state to pass this type of law.
  • Two environmental bills were sent to Governor DeSantis on Tuesday. A bill creating a Biscayne Bay Commission to combat pollution issues & a bill funding a reservoir north of Lake Okeechobee to capture excess water prior to entering the Lake. Currently work is underway on a southern reservoir, which when completed, will serve a similar purpose. Congressman Brian Mast has expressed concern that construction of a northern reservoir prior to the completion of the southern reservoir would divert resources from the current project.
