- The Florida Department of Health’s new weekly reporting shows Florida averaged 2,065 new daily COVID-19 cases last week. That’s up 510 daily cases from the prior week. It appears there has been a slight increase from Memorial Day weekend, but not a spike in cases as of Friday’s reporting.
- A hearing has been set in federal court regarding Florida’s newly signed “Big Tech” law. Judge Robert Hinkle has scheduled a hearing for June 28th to consider whether issuing an injunction which would prevent the new law from taking effect July 1st. The lawsuit has been brought by a consortium representing a basket of technology companies. The new law would allow users of social media platforms up to $100,000 in restitution for accounts unfairly suspended or deplatformed and would impose fines of up to $250,000 per day for the censoring of political campaigns. - No further developments over the weekend regarding Florida’s cruise industry. The federal judge considering the state’s lawsuit challenging the CDC’s “No Sail” order for the cruise industry said on Thursday he’d reach a decision “soon”. The judge’s decision will likely determine whether the cruise industry will be able to resume operations later this month.
- Saharan Dust is making its way to Florida and is expected to arrive by Wednesday and last through at least Saturday. The dust is expected to be thickest from Miami through Vero. The dust commonly aggravates those with dust allergies as the partials have been known to cause eye, nose and throat irritation. Also, those with asthma are encouraged to limit exposure.
