- Coral Springs and Palm Beach became the first South Florida cities to reinstitute mask mandates amid the summer surge in COVID-19 cases. The mandates apply only to indoor activity on city owned property due to an executive order by Governor DeSantis limiting the use of mask mandates by local governments. Related...
- Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings has called the surge in cases in Orlando a “crisis”, saying the county is in “crisis mode”. While no new mandates were issued, Demings noted the near 1,000 new daily cases in the county is as high as they’ve been at any time during the pandemic. This as summer vacationers have packed Orlando’s theme parks this summer.
- Hospitalizations for COVID-19 in Florida have tripled since the beginning of July and have nearly doubled over the past week. A new report shows 6,639 Floridians were hospitalized as the 24th. Florida’s peak day for hospitalizations was July 23rd of last year with 10,014 people hospitalized.
- All of Florida’s 67 counties are currently rated at the highest risk level for the transmitting of COVID-19. Florida ended last week with the highest number of daily cases since January and a higher total than a year ago.
- The perceived final victim of the Champlain Towers South collapse has been identified raising the final death toll to 98 in the Surfside collapse. The recovery effort continues at the collapse site as millions of pounds of ruble remain.
