The Boynton Beach Police Department this week announced the passing of Police K9 Iro.

He served the community from July of 2016 until earlier this month and had originally been partnered with late Officer Joe Crowder, and then with Officer Chris Shalk.

The agency says that Iro helped apprehend dozens of criminals over the years, most notably an armed carjacking suspect who shot at his victim.

K9 Iro was trained to detect currency and firearms and found a number of guns, including an AR-15 hidden under the mattress of a burglary suspect and another used in a Delray Beach homicide.

Iro was recently diagnosed with an aggressive form of bone cancer.
