Florida Vaccination Rates By Age – August 17th

Bottom Line: New COVID-19 cases aren’t the only summer surge that’s happening in Florida. As Florida’s entered peak pandemic conditions in recent weeks, we’re also seeing a resurgence in interest in COVID-19 vaccines – including a remarkably high level of vaccinations among Florida’s seniors. According to the Mayo Clinic’s vaccine-tracker, a total of 61.2% of Florida’s total population has been vaccinated. In the last week alone, additional 355,327 Floridians have been vaccinated with at least a first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine. With vaccination totals exceeding 50k a day in Florida once again here’s an updated look at vaccination rates by age:

  • Under 18: 15.8% (10.1% fully vaccinated)
  • 18-64: 66.2% (54% fully vaccinated)
  • Over 65: 99.5% (86.5% fully vaccinated)

Florida has the largest senior population in the county and it’s remarkable to see a 99.5% vaccination rate. It’s also notable that over 70% of adults over 35 are vaccinated with at least a first dose in Florida. In theory we’re now reaching what we’d been told were herd immunity levels of vaccinations with most populations – including all of the most vulnerable based on age. Of course, going forward questions remain about efficacy against variants and the length of the efficacy of vaccines - this as the boosters for the immuno-compromised are rolling out. There will always be multiple variables, still, there’s no question that the rise of the variants and the peak pandemic conditions in Florida have led to many who were on the fence – getting off of it and getting vaccinated.
