November's Hurricane History - 2023

November's Hurricane History - 2023

Bottom Line: The finish line to hurricane season is in sight and as we start the final month of hurricane season, we do so with a total of 19 named storms having occurred. A total which is above average and generally higher than the preseason estimates which called for an average season. Still, aside from Hurricane Idalia, it’s otherwise been a peaceful Atlantic hurricane season in terms of impact. November is usually a fairly uneventful month, however last November brought us Hurricane Nicole, which made a rare last season landfall in Florida, just the third time on record that it’s happened.

Now, before discussing what typically happens in November, let’s start with a trivia question... Of the six months of hurricane season, which is the most inactive? If you answered November, you're incorrect. It’s June. November is the 2nd least active month of hurricane season and here's the actual breakdown of months based on activity:

  • #1 September
  • #2 August
  • #3 October
  • #4 July
  • #5 November
  • #6 June

What does November generally bring? Since 1851 (the first year of official tracking of the Atlantic hurricane season), November has brought the following... 93 tropical storms and 64 hurricanes. In other words, we average a tropical storm about every other year and a hurricane about every three years. You might say the wind is at our back as we look to close out hurricane season.
