Florida’s Voter Registration by Party – January 23rd, 2024

Florida’s Updated Voter Registration by Party – January 23rd, 2024

Bottom Line: We’re now under 10 months away from Election Day and under two months away from Florida’s Presidential Preference Primary election which coincides with many local elections as well. Florida’s voter registration trends haven’t been the friend of Florida’s Democrats in recent years. For the better part of twenty years Republicans steadily ate away at the voter registration advantage Florida’s Democrats had held since the onset of partisan voter record keeping in the 1970’s. By November of 2021, amid massive pandemic induced relocations, Republican voter registrations outnumbered Democrats for the first time. And every month since the GOP advantage by way of voter registration has grown. At the onset of 2023 Florida’s Democrats opted to head in a new direction with party leadership tapping former Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried to lead the party going forward. It’s safe to say that hasn’t turned the tide back towards Democrats in Florida. The most recent update from Florida’s Division of Elections reflects voter registration information statewide entering 2024.

These are the 2023 voter registration changes:

  • DEM: -566,021 (-98,684 in December)
  • GOP: -170,274 (-16,905 last month)
  • NPA/Other: -450,107 (-79,509 last month)

The current breakout of registered voters looks like this...

  • DEM: 32.7%
  • GOP: 38.5%
  • NPA/Other: 28.8%

The great off election year purge of registered voters culminated in over a million fewer voters by the end of the year compared to the start of it in 2023. The losses of voters, as voter rolls were cleaned up, clearly weren’t equitable however with Democrats far and away losing the most voters with declines every month of the year. The result is yet another record Republican voter advantage within the state as we've entered this presidential election cycle. The Republican advantage over Democrats now stands at 779,701 voters. That includes a net change of 81,779 to the advantage of Republicans over the past month. Of Florida’s 67 counties – only 11 currently have Democrat majorities by way of voter registration. The big news to start the year is that for the first time in the history St. Lucie County Republicans now hold a voter registration advantage. Should the current pace keep up there could be others that flip before Election Day in November.
