It’s All About Delegates - The Presidential Primary Races & What’s Next – March 13th, 2024
Bottom Line: The nomination season has effectively ended early this cycle with both the current and the former president clinching the necessary pledged delegates in Tuesday night’s elections to win their parties' nominations – making this my final edition of this series for the 2024 election cycle. While the nominations won’t be official until they’re confirmed at each party’s convention this summer, both Biden and Trump are now officially the “presumptive nominees” of their parties.
Here's where the Republican candidates stand with pledged delegates (1,215 delegates needed to clinch nomination):
- Trump: 1,228
- Haley: 91
As for the Democrats (1,968 delegates needed to clinch nomination):
- Biden: 2,099
- Uncommitted: 20
As for what’s next? 26 states and territories, including Florida (we’re next Tuesday), have yet to vote. Those elections will continue through June 4th. From there it’ll be on to the conventions. The Republican convention will take place in Milwaukee July 15th through the 18th with the Democrat’s convention set for Chicago August 19th through the 22nd. The biggest development yet to come (aside from legal matters) will be Donald Trump’s choice for a running mate. While the former president may make the announcement at any time, it appears as though he’s more likely to wait until we’re closer to the convention or even during the convention. The most recent news from Trump senior campaign advisor Jason Miller is that the VP “short list” has most recently been growing larger.
