Florida’s Updated Voter Registration by Party – March 21st, 2024
Bottom Line: Florida’s voter registration trends haven’t been the friend of Florida’s Democrats in recent years. For the better part of twenty years Republicans steadily ate away at the voter registration advantage Florida’s Democrats had held since the onset of partisan voter record keeping in the 1970’s. By November of 2021, amid massive pandemic induced relocations, Republican voter registrations outnumbered Democrats for the first time. And every month since the GOP advantage by way of voter registration has grown. At the onset of 2023 Florida’s Democrats opted to head in a new direction with party leadership tapping former Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried to lead the party going forward. It’s safe to say that hasn’t turned the tide back towards Democrats in Florida. Last year Florida’s Democrats saw an active voter registration decline of greater than 566,000 voters. Early in 2024 the trend of a growing Republican advantage in the state has remained the same.
The most recent update from Florida’s Division of Elections reflects voter registration information statewide as of February 20th.
These are the 2024 voter registration changes:
- DEM: +1,343
- GOP: +73,059
- NPA/Other: +24,949
The current breakout of registered voters looks like this...
- DEM: 32.4%
- GOP: 38.8%
- NPA/Other: 28.8%
Democrats have stopped hemorrhaging voters at the onset of this presidential election year, which is to be expected as the election historically serves as a catalyst for voters who haven’t registered to vote previously to do so. However, obviously Republicans have benefitted far more than Democrats from those newly registering to vote to start the year. What’s more is that Democrats are continuing to underperform NPA registrations as well. If the current trends hold Democrats could be at risk of sliding to the third position within the state in the not-so-distant future.
The Republican advantage over Democrats now stands at a record 851,417 voters. That includes a net change of 71,716 to the advantage of Republicans over the past month. Of Florida’s 67 counties – only 11 currently have Democrat majorities by way of voter registration. Should the current pace keep up there could be others that flip before Election Day in November.
