- Governor DeSantis signed four bills into law on Thursday including the Transportation Facility Designation bill. The new law which takes effect with most of Florida’s new laws, on Monday – July 1st, designates several roadways and bridges to be named after notable figures in local communities. The specialty License Plates bill will become law on October 1st. The new law will enable Floridians to purchase one of nine new specialty license plates including a Margaritaville tag in honor of the late Jimmy Buffet.
- Details have emerged about the sudden closing of the Palm Springs recovery center the Retreat at Palm Beach last Friday. According to the CFO of the recovery center’s parent company Retreat Behavioral Health, the recovery center “ran out of cash”. Notably two company executives have committed suicide over the past week. The company operated recovery centers in multiple states with a total of 750 employees.
- Amazon will kick off its plan to hire 1,000 new employees in Port St. Lucie today. Starting at 7 tonight Amazon will begin accepting applications for a soon-to-be completed warehouse in the city. Officials will begin the hiring process on Monday with a goal to hire 150-200 positions next week with an additional 150-250 jobs to be made available the following week. The process will continue until all 1,000 positions have been filled.
- Sunny skies this morning will give way to increasing clouds with a chance of afternoon thunderstorms. Highs will be around 90 - a few degrees warmer than usual for this date. The National Hurricane Center is tracking three disturbances. A disturbance in the western Carribean is expected to emerge in the Southern Gulf of Mexico over the next few days. It has a 30% chance of development as it makes its way towards Mexico. A disturbance in the southeastern Atlantic is likely to develop. It has a 90% chance of development as it makes its way towards the Lesser Antilles. A third disturbance is also in the southeastern Atlantic tracking just behind the other disturbance on a similar path with a 20% chance of development.
- After recently rising gas prices were flat on Thursday. The average price for regular unleaded in Florida is currently $3.44 per gallon. In Palm Beach County the average price is $3.58 per gallon, in Martin the average is $3.50 and in Indian River County the average is $3.41 per gallon.
