- The legal challenge to Florida’s recently announced financial impact statement on Amendment 4, the abortion amendment that will be on November’s ballots, has been dismissed by the 1st District Court of Appeal. The legal challenge was brought prior to the state’s impact statement being issued last week, leading to the dismissal. The court left open the possibility that a new legal challenge could be brought based on the specific statement issued by Florida’s Impact Estimating Conference. The state’s guidance suggests the amendment could have a negative effect on Florida’s budget if passed.
- American Mobile Insurance, a mobile home insurance provider, is exiting Florida’s market after issues gaining reinsurance for underwritten policies within the state. While the overall property insurance market has begun to recover from the previous litigation crisis, the mobile home insurance industry remains especially challenged with insurers finding it problematic to underwrite policies for the storm vulnerable homes.
- Only a third of Florida’s state legislative races will have primaries. Monday was the candidate filing deadline for Florida’s August 20th primary elections.
- A mix of clouds and rain again today with a high in the upper 80’s. Temperatures will be about 2 degrees warmer than usual for this date. Thanks in large part to a significant Saharan dust cloud, the National Hurricane Center’s map is clear and the NHC isn’t expecting tropical activity for the next 7 days.
- Gas prices rose significantly, by 7 cents per gallon, on Monday. The average price for regular unleaded in Florida is currently $3.42 per gallon. In Palm Beach County the average price is $3.58 per gallon, in Martin the average is $3.43 and in Indian River County the average is $3.41 per gallon.
