James Copenhaver, the second spectator injured during the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, was discharged from Pittsburgh's Allegheny General Hospital on Friday, July 26. The 74-year-old resident of Moon Township, Pennsylvania, was critically injured during the shooting at a Trump campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13.
Copenhaver's family released a statement saying he was recovering from "life-altering injuries."
"The Copenhaver family would like to thank you for your continued thoughts, prayers, and support as Jim and his family recover from this horrible, senseless, and unnecessary act of violence," the family said.
The other injured rallygoer, David Dutch, 57, was discharged from Allegheny General Hospital on Wednesday, July 24. Corey Comperatore, 50, was killed at the rally while shielding his family when the shooting started.
The gunman, identified as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, fired from the roof of an adjacent building and was killed moments afterward by Secret Service snipers. Trump was also wounded in the shooting, with a bullet hitting his ear.
In the aftermath of the shooting, the House voted to establish a bipartisan task force to investigate the assassination attempt. Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle resigned last week amid criticisms of the agency's preparedness to prevent the attack.
