- The Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s Great Outdoor Initiative’s proposal to develop parts of Johnathan Dickinson State Park has been withdrawn. Over the weekend the FDEP announced that the Tuskegee Dunes Foundation, which had proposed the building of golf courses and a club house inside of the state park, had withdrawn the proposal. In a letter the FDEP said “This project will be removed from agency review”. The announcement followed considerable backlash throughout the community. Questions still remain about the development proposals at eight other state parks.
- Florida’s final disaster preparedness sales tax holiday of the year is underway and will continue through September 6th. From batteries to generators valued at up to $3,000, most items that would be handy in an emergency event are tax free during this time. This includes pet supplies and food. We’re currently within the historical peak three weeks of hurricane season.
- Starting today South Ocean Blvd. in the vicinity of Mar-a-Lago will be closed until further notice. Recently an agreement between the Town of Palm Beach and the Secret Service had been reached that would have closed the road only while former President Donald Trump was at Mar-a-Lago. On Sunday, however, authorities announced the closure of South Ocean Blvd. between South County Road and Southern Blvd. until further notice.
- It’ll be hot today with morning showers possible and highs near 90. Temperatures will be about 5 degrees warmer than usual for this date. The National Hurricane Center isn’t expecting the development of any tropical systems over the next seven days.
- Gas prices fell through the weekend and are 2 cents lower than a week ago. The average price for regular unleaded in Florida is currently $3.27 per gallon. In Palm Beach County the average price is $3.44 per gallon, in Martin the average is $3.28 and in Indian River County the average is $3.24 per gallon.
