An 11-year-old child was killed, and four others were injured after a woman crashed through a gate at an elementary school in Australia on Tuesday (October 29). Authorities said that the 40-year-old woman had just picked up her child from Auburn South Primary School and was making a U-turn when she barreled through a fence and crashed into a table where five children were sitting.

Police Inspector Craig McEvoy said that an 11-year-old boy was rushed to the hospital with critical injuries, where he was pronounced dead. In addition, two 11-year-old girls, a 10-year-old girl, and a 10-year-old boy were hospitalized and remain in serious condition.

The woman and her child were unharmed in the crash. McEvoy said that the woman remained at the scene and is in custody. She is cooperating with investigators.

McEvoy called the crash a "tragic accident."

"[It's] a really tough scene, always when children are involved," he added.

It is unknown if the woman will face charges.
