Florida News That Impacts You – December 6th, 2021

Bottom Line: Your daily recap of the some of the biggest news from around the state that impacts you in South Florida. 

  • The good news: Florida entered this week with the fewest population adjusted COVID-19 cases in the country for the sixth consecutive week. The not so good news: Average cases in Florida, like the rest of the country, have risen over the past week. That includes a rise in hospitalizations as well. Florida’s averaged 1,742 new COVID-19 cases, or about 500 more daily cases than a week ago. 
  • After the recent federal ruling striking down the newly ratified Seminole Compact, which included the addition of sports betting in Florida, the Seminole Tribe shut down sports betting operations over the weekend. Calling the move temporary, the Tribe will refund money users had through their sports betting app which had been live since November 1st. 
  • Elon Musk has confirmed SpaceX is building a Starship launch pad at Cape Canaveral. The Starship is SpaceX’s next-generation vehicle which until now had been under development exclusively in Texas. 
  • A 2022 real-estate forecast for South Florida issued by Realtor.com shows an expected 6% increase in home prices for the tri-county next year. That’s after a year of home prices having appreciated by an average of 15%-20% across South Florida this year.
