Florida News That Impacts You – February 22nd, 2022

Bottom Line: Your daily recap of the biggest news from around the state that impacts you in South Florida.

  • Florida entered this week only averaging 5,580 new COVID-19 cases daily. The trend is the lowest since December 19th. Likewise, Covid-positive hospitalizations and attributed deaths have continued to decline to the lowest levels in around two months.
  • Among the movers in Monday’s state Legislative Session, the bill limiting most abortions to 15 weeks in Florida. After passing the House last week, the companion legislation passed its final Senate committee and now heads for a final vote before the full state Senate.
  • After Governor DeSantis originally indicated he might not be supportive of reductions in funding for the 12 school districts which violated state law over school mask mandates – he's now onboard with the House budget proposal. Under the budget proposal South Florida’s school districts would see the biggest impact with the Miami-Dade School District seeing a $72 million reduction in funding, with Broward and Palm Beach Counties seeing reductions of $32 million and $28 million.
  • MLB and MLBPA representatives met at Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter for nearly five hours on Monday in an effort to bridge differences which might resolve the current lockout. The impasse has led to Spring training cancellations through March 2nd. Owners say a deal must be reached by the 28th in order to avoid regular season cancellations. The meeting was the longest to-date, and the two sides are scheduled to continue negotiations today.
