Florida Fish and Wildlife announced that the experimental manatee feeding program will wind down as the weather warms up and manatees begin to migrate away from FPL’s power plants which is a preferred winter gathering ground due to warmer water.
The program began in December following a record number of manatee deaths recorded last year with starvation cited as the most common cause of death.
According to officials, feeding lettuce to manatees might be necessary again next winter because of the continuing issues with seagrass in the lagoon.
