Time Changes & World Leaders – March 17th, 2022

  1. The dustbin of history. That’s where time changes should go. And finally, there’s a chance that they will. There’s arguably a lot of stuff in society that we’ve done to ourselves that doesn’t make sense. Exhibit “A” is public policy by just about all public officials at the onset of the pandemic. Exhibit “B” is continued mandated pandemic public policy by federal agencies and certain blue cities and states despite the reality we’re no longer even in a pandemic. But this is recent failed public policy. I’m not sure there’s a more failed public policy, this side of the federal income tax, that we’ve stayed with longer than time changes. A policy which was only brought about to begin with due to emergency measures taken during World War I. A few things have changed since then – none the least of which is World War I...over 100 years ago. During the pandemic many comparisons have been made to the 1918 pandemic. Ironically the US adopted time changes prior to that pandemic beginning in the United States. Time changes themselves have been a form of their own pandemic ever since. As Senator Marco Rubio repeatedly has illustrated over the years as he’s advanced the Sunshine Protection Act, an effort to have the federal Government recognize Florida’s law which would leave Florida in Daylight Saving Time permanently, time changes – like nasty viruses – are bad for your health. This week, the week after entering Daylight Saving Time, features the largest one week increase of auto accidents, heart attacks, miscarriages and strokes of the year. Other than that, it's great – right? That’s what happens to our society when we artificially decide there are 23 hours in a day. In the fall, that’s not good for us either. With darkness descending earlier there’s a spike in depression and there’s a huge economic hit. A 2017 study by JP Morgan suggests Florida’s economy losses between $12 to $26 billion annually due to the change. Why would any society do this to itself? And yet we have. But finally...
  2. We’re halfway there. How much bipartisanship is there in Congress right now? How many votes are unanimous? Tuesday’s vote on Rubio’s Sunshine Protection Act was. Presented with the facts, there’s not a single United States Senator who disagreed that we should ever change the time again. It was simply a matter of bringing it up for a vote. That means we’re halfway there. First was Florida’s Sunshine Protection Act, signed into law by then Governor Rick Scott in 2017. Now there’s the United States Senate passing Rubio’s federal companion. It’s on to the U.S. House – and if passed to President Biden. But time is of the essence – no pun intended. It’s not just that the measure needs to pass before this fall to avoid another cycle of time changes. It must pass this year, before the current Congress ends, for the Senate vote to remain valid. In what’s been referred by some as a “do-nothing” Congress – this is something they can and should finish doing. While they’re otherwise doing nothing. Florida sponsors of the legislation in the House include – Michael Waltz, Greg Steube, Maria Elvira Salazar, Bill Posey, Darren Soto, Charlie Crist, Carlos Gimenez, Brian Mast and Daniel Webster. To all of them – thank you. To Florida’s other 19 House Representatives... WTH? So, here’s the thing. If you’re represented by someone who I did not mention – call them & tell them to support the Sunshine Protection Act. Time is literally of the essence, and we’re forced to rely on Nancy Pelosi to do the right thing and bring this to a vote. Otherwise, Congress is liable to continue to do nothing.
  3. Who would you want to lead you into battle? Biden or Zelenski? Is there any question in your mind who you’d want leading you when the chips are down? On Wednesday, Ukraine President Zelenski looked and sounded a hell of a lot more like the leader of the free world than the man he called on to be the leader of the world. And I’m not just saying this because Zelenski is about half Biden’s age and Joe looks and sounds like he’s potentially 30-seconds away from death at any given time. One of them sounds and leads like the leader of the free world. One of them blames everyone else for their problems and refuses to change course. The same leader who denies the other leader the consideration he’s asking for which is likely what’s needed to preserve freedom in his country. If Zelenski and Biden squared off in an election today to be leader of the world, who would you vote for?
