Bottom Line: Your daily recap of the biggest news from around the state that impacts you in South Florida.

  • New COVID-19 cases resumed the recent upward trend on Thursday. Florida enters April averaging 1,424 daily cases. While near the lowest levels since the onset of the pandemic, the trend is the highest since March 11th.
  • The average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gas is 1-cent lower today in Florida. The statewide average is $4.19 per gallon. South Florida maintains the highest prices in the state with the average ranging from $4.24 to $4.49 per gallon.
  • Federal Judge Mark Walker struck down key provisions of last year’s Election Integrity law. Citing race as a key factor in his decision, Walker took the extraordinary step of instituting a 10-year provision under which the state legislature would have to get preclearance from his court to amend voting procedures in the state. Governor DeSantis stated the state will appeal to the Atlanta Circuit Court which has previously overturned numerous decisions by the Obama-appointed judge.
  • While in West Palm Beach with CFO & Chief Fire Marshall Jimmy Patronis, Governor DeSantis announced local first responders will receive $1,000 bonuses for the second consecutive year.
  • DeSantis also announced support for stripping Disney of the ability to essentially self-govern. The 1967 Reedy Creek Improvement Act created a special carve out for Disney to special privileges for legal oversight not afforded to other companies. State Rep. Spencer Roach announced the legislature is discussing legislation repealing the privileges.
