Florida News That Impacts You – May 9th, 2022

Bottom Line: Your daily recap of the biggest news from around the state that impacts you in South Florida.

  • Covid cases continue to rise... Florida enters this week averaging over 4,800 daily COVID-19 cases over the past week. That’s the highest since February 21st. Speaking of rising trends...
  • The average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gas is $4.21 per gallon this morning. Two cents higher than Friday and up another three cents over a week ago. Prices remain well above average in South Florida with an average price of $4.24 per gallon in Broward & Miami-Dade – with a statewide high of $4.40 in Palm Beach County.
  • The National Hurricane Center is tracking the first tropical wave of the hurricane preseason. The wave has developed off the coast of Africa which is somewhat unusual for this time of the year. While hurricane season doesn’t technically begin until June 1st, the first named storm of the hurricane season has occurred in May each year since 2015.
  • Florida’s 2021 Election Integrity law has been restored by the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals by a three-judge panel. On Friday the Court issued a stay against federal Judge Mark Walker’s ruling striking down most components of the state’s law – along with a somewhat extraordinary demand that the state seek pre-approval from him prior to passing any related reforms for the next ten years. The case will still be heard before the 11th Circuit Court for a final ruling, however the stay indicates the state retains a good chance of winning its case.
