The Great Florida Migration Continues

Bottom Line: No, the real-estate market isn’t as hot as it was. Yes, real-estate in Florida – especially South Florida is expensive. No, there’s no slowing down the number of Americans looking to migrate to our state. For five straight years Florida’s been the top destination for out-of-state movers. During the first half of this year 10% of all Americans relocating between states came to Florida. As we’re kicking off the second half of this year that number is only going to grow. According to Coldwell Banker’s Move Meter, which tracks relocations between states – Florida’s now the destination for one out of every seven, or over 14%, of Americans relocating between states. An increase of 40% over what we’ve seen up to now. The top cities for relocations in the second half of this year are...

  • Sarasota, Miami, Naples and Tampa – in that order

And where are people relocating from...

  • New Jersey, California, New York, Illinois, Ohio and Massachusetts – in that order

Something might have jumped out at you there. California has now passed New York in producing transplants to Florida. Last year California produced the fifth new transplants. In real-time they’re second. There’s a great deal of irony with Gavin Newsom having recently advertised his state’s “freedom” over Florida’s. Making an appeal for Floridians to move to California. Under his watch more Californians than ever before are moving across the country to make it to the Free State of Florida. The Great Florida Migration continues in larger numbers than ever before and increasingly from further distances than before.
